There are hundreds of different versions of the Cinderella story. The first known version of this story comes from China and was probably written around 860, but the most well known version was written by French author Charles Perrault.
I would challenge older students and those adept at reading and researching to find at least fifteen to compare. For younger students or families pressed for time, I would suggest five. Make a chart to compare the different titles. The more versions you are able to examine, the better your chart will turn out. Compare the versions by answering the following questions for each one.

Where does the story take place? Remember that this is a story popular around the world, so different cultures will have different versions.

What are Cindy‘s circumstances? Is she faced with an evil stepmother and step sisters in every version, or are there other antagonists?

Who are Cindy‘s allies? Disney‘s version gives her animal friends… what about the others?

Do all of the stories have happy endings?

These are just some questions to get you started. Write down any others that you can think of before you get started, and when you‘re done, you will be able to analyze the stories side by side on your chart.
